China Display Panel Shipments to Account for 60% of the Global Share in 2021, LCD and OLED are the Mainstream of the Market

Beijing time June 20, BOE Technology Group Co. President Liu Xiaodong: China display panel shipments will account for more than 60% of the global share in 2021. The 2021 World Display Industry Conference, sponsored by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and Anhui Provincial People’s Government, was successfully held in Hefei. At the conference, Liu Xiaodong, president of BOE Technology Group, delivered an opening speech entitled “Infinite Vision, Endless Innovation”. In the opening speech, Liu said that display is an important port for information interaction, and the display is everywhere. With the booming development of telemedicine, leisure and entertainment, online education, and other industries, the display industry has ushered in new opportunities for development, and the boom of the whole industry is very high. 2021 China’s display panel shipments also reached a historical high.

China display panel shipments stand out from global shipments

The global display industry market is rising a warmth. Liu pointed out in his speech that at this stage, the global display industry shipments and production have achieved a flush growth. He said that from 2010 to 2015, the global display industry shipments are in high growth with a compound annual growth rate of 19%, with smartphones occupying the largest part of the share. From 2015 to 2020, the global display industry is in a stable growth period, with a CAGR of 2% in shipments. It is expected that from 2021, the global display industry will enter the next period of rapid growth, with shipments growing at a CAGR of 7%, with innovative application growth contributing 76% of the share.

“Display is indeed everywhere, and the display is an important port for information interaction.” Liu said in his speech, “Display devices are playing an increasingly important role in people’s access to information through vision.” Relevant information shows that 83% of human information access is achieved through vision, and vision is the most important channel for humans to access information. Liu said that the popularity of traditional applications such as cell phones, tablet PCs, notebooks, monitors, and TVs has been very high, and screens are ubiquitous in these products. At present, innovative applications represented by car display, home appliances, wear, splicing, electronic tags, etc. are emerging, and the display is giving more power to solutions such as city lighting, security monitoring, remote treatment, business office, and intelligent cultural and museum.

Liu said, at present, telemedicine, leisure and entertainment, online education, cross-border meetings, body temperature warning, intelligent catering, and other industries are in full swing. In 2020, global GDP declined, but the display industry showed a counter-trend growth, with an output value growth rate of 12.6%. Liu talked about how the global GDP will return to normal growth this year, and the display industry output value growth is expected to exceed the global GDP growth rate.

In his speech, Liu shared the development of the display industry in mainland China. He said that in 2005, BOE invested in the mass production of mainland China’s first five-generation line with independent intellectual property rights, and China officially entered the semiconductor display industry. From 2010, the first six-generation line and 8.5-generation line in mainland China achieved mass production one after another, marking the display industry in mainland China entered a period of rapid development. 2018, BOE invested in mainland China’s first, and the world’s first 10.5-generation line to achieve mass production. Liu said this shows that mainland China’s display industry has become a global industry leader from a follower, achieving leapfrogging high-speed development.

“By 2021, mainland China’s display panel shipments are expected to account for more than 60 percent of the global total,” Liu said that mainland China will become the most important pole in the global display world, and next, mainland China’s display industry will continue to maintain high growth.

LCD and OLED are still the mainstream of the market in China’s display panel shipments

BOE is one of the most important forces in the Chinese display market. Liu introduced that BOE has laid out 16 semiconductor display production lines nationwide, from the Ordos to production lines in Chengdu, Chongqing, Mianyang, and Kunming, and then to production lines in Beijing, Hefei, Wuhan, Fuzhou, and Nanjing.

One out of every four displays in the world comes from BOE. From 2019 to 2020, BOE’s display shipments are up 7% and the shipping area is up 9%, significantly exceeding the industry average, Liu said. According to Media data, the market share of BOE screen products continues to rank first in the world in traditional mainstream applications such as cell phones, tablet PCs, notebook PCs, desktop monitors, TV sets TVs, and oversized.

The global display technology development route is evolving. Liu said that LCD is expected to become mainstream in the future, and OLED will achieve rapid development. “LCD and OLED will also be the protagonists of the display industry and play an important role in the display industry,” Liu said that in the global display industry, companies, research institutes, universities, and many independent organizations are very active in innovation. He said innovation around high refresh rate, oxide technology, and flexible OLED and 8K is very active.

BOE has innovative practices in TFT LCD, AMOLED, and QLED. Liu cited, in the TFT LCD field, BOE’s products have high resolution and high refresh rate, AMOLED products have a folding screen cell phone, AMOLED application expansion has smartwatch, folding notebook and shaped car tail light, etc., and large size OLED. in addition, BOE has innovative products in Mini LED display, QLED field.

BOE has an integrated platform of the panel, module, complete machine, and service, providing a full set of solutions and products empowering security, office, home, car, transportation, education, and other industries. Liu Xiaodong said that BOE has invested more than 100 billion yuan in Hefei, with a cumulative output value of more than 270 billion yuan, and absorbed more than 20,000 people in employment. BOE has attracted more than 120 enterprises in industrial pulling, and the cluster output value is about 170 billion yuan per year, and the base investment reaches 200 billion yuan.

Currently, with the accelerated industrial integration of the digital economy led by new-generation information technology and the booming development of trillion Internet of Things market, BOE continues to integrate its leading advantages in the semiconductor display field with new-generation information technology such as artificial intelligence, big data, etc. and build a “1+1” with semiconductor display as the core, Mini LED, sensors and solutions, intelligent system, intelligent medical industry, etc. The company has built a “1+4+N” carrier business group with the core of semiconductor display, Mini LED, sensors and solutions, intelligent system, intelligent medical industry, etc., and transformed into an innovative IoT enterprise. With the world’s leading technological innovation strength and product application capability, BOE extends the tentacles of intelligent display terminals and empowers many niche application scenarios such as smart finance, smart retail, smart transportation, and smart medical, etc., continuously launching the ultimate products.

China display panel shipments and China’s display technology occupy an important position on the world stage, Liu concluded his speech by saying “display is everywhere, innovation is never-ending, deep cooperation, create a win-win situation.
